November Election Strategy

The South King County Group is looking forward to educating voters and "getting out the environmental vote" in November. Our plans include identifying Sierra Club members in key South King County precincts who don't vote regularly. We want to encourage these Sierra Club members to participate in electing environmentally conscientious candidates and to support issues that maintain and enhance environmental protections.

To reach these Sierra Club members, we will be ringing doorbells and providing them with absentee ballot applications (as well as voter registration applications, if required). We will also be distributing educational information concerning key races and issues in the South King County area. We welcome help with these efforts.

Upcoming Events: Soos Creek Spring Planting and Restoration

May 6th will mark our third year of working together with King County Parks and The Friends of Soos Creek on improving habitat along the Soos Creek Trail, which runs from Kent through Covington and on in to Renton. We have been removing tons of ivy and Scotch broom in areas wher these non-native and very aggressive invasive plants have spread, wiping out the native plants and even toppling trees (ivy can weigh hundreds of pounds once it climbs into tall trees). To restore and improve habitat, we have planted many native plants -- vine maple, red osier dogwood, snowberry, Oregon grape, and others -- on which our native birds, mammals, and other species depend. We invite community members who value this local wild place to join us.

Date: Saturday, May 6, from 9:00 - 2:00. Wear work clothes and gloves. Bring pruners, loppers, and rakes, if you have them. Drinks and snacks provided. We will meet at the parking lot at the south end of the trail, along 148th Ave. SE, just off SE 266th St. near Lake Meridian Park.
