Tips for Writing Letters to the Editor

A letter to your local paper enables you to inform large audiences about important issues.
In fact, the letters to the editor section of the newspaper is read more frequently than any other and are perceived as a display of public sentiment by elected officials.
Best of all, letters to the editor, for all the influence they carry in a newspaper, only take a small investment of time and thought..
Letters to the editor are a very versatile and effective format. They allow for:

A chance to respond to other editorials or to rebut to a news or feature story

A chance to cover the local effects of national issues and raise local public awareness of issues

Most importantly, letters to the editor provide for a chance to furnish insight on news and issues not being adequately covered by your local newspaper.

If your letter relates to a recent article or editorial the newspaper printed, refer to that in your first line. Be brief and clear. Best length is about two to three short paragraphs (max. 250-300 words). Short letters are more likely to be printed than long ones. Include your full name, address and phone number. It’s also very effective to send a copy of your letter to your lawmakers that may influence legislation on the issue.
