Sign the Home Depot Petition

If you've watched Fox News, you probably already know how they're working overtime to prop up the myth of uncertainty about climate change, calling it a “hoax,” characterizing climate scientists as "alarmists," and Al Gore as “unhinged." To expose Fox’s skewed and inaccurate coverage, a grassroots coalition including the Sierra Club, Brave New Films, and MoveOn.org Civic Action, has launched a petition campaign targeting Home Depot. Publicly, Home Depot states that it is serious about protecting the environment, yet it remains one of Fox's major advertisers. This appears to be a clear conflict in policy and we encourage people to point this out to Home Depot by signing onto the petition campaign.

Kent Asked to Become a Cool City

On Wednesday, June 27, Jessica Eagle and SKCG Chair, Dan Streiffert, met with Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke (pictured, below right) to discuss Kent becoming a Cool City by developing and implementing a plan to combat climate change. Also attending the meeting were two fellows from the Kent Environmental Department, Kelly Peterson and Mike Mactutis, who had been studying up on the issue and were quite helpful.

Right now, there are over 600 “Cool Cities” nationwide and the number continues to grow every day!  A city is declared “cool” when the mayor signs the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. This agreement states that the city will work to meet 7% below the city’s 1990 levels of carbon emissions by 2012.  By implementing a plan, cities not only cool their carbon emissions and other global warming pollution, they will save money through energy efficiency and create environmental and healthy communities.  Mayor Cooke is supportive of the program and hopes to put a plan into action. She charged the city environmental engineers with developing a proposal for her to consider. If all goes well, Kent will soon be Cool City. Click here to send Mayor Cooke an email, thanking her for considering strong plans to combat global warming by making Kent a Cool City.

Fourth of July Splash Festival

This 4th of July, the Sierra Club was the only environmental organization to set up a booth at the Kent Fourth of July Splash festival. We were given the spot right near the entrance where the shuttles dropped families off before finding their way to the lake. In front of a booth with red, white, and blue banners that said, “Protect America’s environment: for our families, for the future,” we asked those attending to sign Cool State postcards or do photo petitions using speech bubbles with messages to Governor Gregoire or Kent Mayor Cooke. A couple of the messages in the photo read, “You go, girl! Make Kent a Cool City," and “Governor Gregoire, protect the future generations….80% Carbon reductions by 2050.”

Most people were supportive and concerned about global warming and almost everyone who stopped was willing to sign or take a photo. We had some conversations about solutions to global warming, such as how to make homes more energy efficient.

Throughout the day, we talked to several hundred people. We collected just over 200 public comments supporting clean energy solutions!  Many of these people were especially interested in protecting the planet for future generations. Overall, this educational event was rewarding and successful!
